Laser cards are only issued in Ireland – and are gradually becoming less popular as some banks have replaced them with Visa Debit cards. Bank of Ireland still use laser cards – so there are thousands of Irish people who have one.
You could of course use a credit card – but many people don’t want a credit card or maybe can’t get one – so a Laser card is all they have.
One way for online shoppers to get around the problem of laser cards not being accepted on many websites – is to apply for a Prepaid Mastercard. It is a Debit card that can be used to buy things anywhere a Mastercard is accepted .
It costs €10 a year – but you can top it up online using your laser card for free. There are no fees when you use it to buy things – and it can be used online and abroad (unlike Laser).
Another money saving feature of the Prepaid Mastercard – is that it if you use it to book Ryanair flights – you don’t get charged the booking admin fee. This fee is €12 per person per return flight – so over a year if you use Ryanair a few times you will easily recoup the cost of the Prepaid Mastercard many times over.
